Safety

Naturally, the standard implements of safety, such as eye protection, first aid supplies, and fire extinguishers, are necessary in any maker space. But equally as important is clear and abundant communication. When the groundwork of acceptable behavior and tool use is clearly laid out and reinforced using signage, there’s less room for misunderstanding, mitigating the chance of accidents.

안전

메이커 스페이스에 필요한 기본적인 안전용품은 첫 번째로 구급약품과 소화기를 비치하고 보안경과 같은 일반적인 안전용품이 갖춰져야 한다. 명확하고 다양한 소통전달 또한 중요하다. 작업을 시작하는 작업자에게 공구와 허용된 동작에 대해 사용법을 알려줌으로써 모르는 공구를 사용함으로서 발생되는 사고를 예방 할 수 있다.

Introducing Tools and Materials

Understanding the affordances of tools and materials —namely, how they work, what they make possible, and their strengths and limitations— is of critical importance for their safe use. The right tool or material for any given job isn’t just the most effective—it’s the safest.

도구와 재료 교육

메이커들이 무엇을 만들고, 메이커의 제작 능력 과 장단점에 따라 공구와 재료를 살펴보는 것이 메이커들의 안전하게 공구와 재료를 사용하게 한다. 어떤 작업에 적합한 공구와 재료라는 것은 최대의 효과를 내기위함 뿐만 아니라 안전함을 위한 것이다.

Safe tool use begins with conversation. When introducing a tool and material for the first time, it’s helpful to include learners in the discussion. Ask questions to spur discussion. What do you notice about the tool/material? What do you wonder about it? What can it be used for? What might go wrong? In this way, understanding and agreements about proper and safe use can be built collaboratively with youth, establishing shared ownership and investment. Resulting conversations may sound like, “It’s cool you can melt things with the soldering iron. I’ll bet it could hurt, too. Can it set paper on fire? Does it stay hot after I’m done with it? How can I let people know that it’s still hot when I’m done? Many maker spaces establish that all tools, from hammers to laser cutters, require training before being free to use without adult supervision. Even trainings can be designed to be youth-centered. At STEAM Labs, for example, when a new tool is introduced, the facilitator leads a conversation about the right tool for the job, followed by a conversation about how to use the tool. For the second time a child uses a tool, instead of telling them the rules for the tool again, children are encouraged to teach another child how to use the tool, with a mentor listening.

처음으로 공구와 재료 소개시간에 대화를 통해 안전한 공구를 사용하게 하며 토론하도록 하여 배우는 아이들을 돕도록 하고 제안을 독려하기 위해 질문하도록 한다. 공구와 재료가 무었이 있을까요?공구와 재료에는 무었이 있을까 궁금하지 않나요? 이것을 어디에 사용할 수 있을까요? 잘못될 것 같은 것은 무었일까요? 이러한 방법으로, 도구와 재료의 안전하고 적절한 사용에 대하여 이해하고 동의를 통해 청소년들의 협업을 구성할 수 있다. 다음과 같은 대화들이 나올 듯 하다. 차거운 납땜인두기가 사물을 녹일 수 있다. 아플 수도 있겠는데. 종이에 불을 붙일 수도 있지 않을까? 그런 후에도 뜨거움은 남는가? 마치고 난 후에 계속 뜨겁도록 하는 방법을 알려 줄 사람? 메이커스페이스에 준비되어 있는 햄머부터 레이저커터에 이르는 모든 공구를 매니저의 도움 없이 자유롭게 사용하려면 반드시 사전 교육이 이루어 져야 한다. 뿐만 아이라 훈련으로 청소년전용으로 꾸며져야한다. 일례로 STEAM Labs에서는 새로운 공구를 소개할 때 퍼실리터는 작업을 위해 올바른 공구에 관해 공구의 사용법에 대해 토론을 이끌어 가고 토론의 결과에 따른다. 청소년이 공구를 사용하는 두번째 시간에, 공구사용법에 대하여 퍼실리터 대신 하여 청소년들은 멘토에게 들은 내용을 다른 친구들에게 공구의 사용법을 가르쳐 주도록 독려한다. Signage and Contracts Signs can provide helpful on-the-spot instruction and reminders through out your space. At DIY Girls, each piece of equipment has an instructional sign on the wall next to it promoting safe usage. There is also a contract, which outlines the rules and agreements of the space, that each of the girls who uses the space signs. The verbiage of the contract is also posted on the wall as a reminder. We’ll let these signage examples speak for themselves.

표식 및 계약 표식은 메이커스페이스에서 공구의 사용법과 유의점을 알려준다. DIY걸스에서는 장비의 안전한 사용을 목적으로 장비의 부품에 안내표식을 벽체에 소개표식을 해 놨다. 또한 메이커스페이스를 사용하기위한 각종 표식과 규칙과 동의를 요약한 계약서가 있다. 장황한 계약서는 벽에 포스팅된 것에 대해서도 각인시켜준다. 표식의 예제를 통해 다시 말해준다. DIY 걸스 http://www.diygirls.org/
